I am learning this song and will eventually perform it, if it kills me. Probably will; these tunes aren't done anymore for a good reason. At as much as a hundred chord changes a minute it's enough to make a musician go into plumbing. I just wish I could see "To Beat The Band again, RKO Radio Pictures, 1935, with, of all people, Roger Pryor. But it's Johnny Mercer and his songs that I'm after.

TOO MANY COMMERCIALS!!!!! I had to leave, and I will hopefully, remember the title before I put this on again. I don't like putting on some music, then walking away to brush my teeth or something, only to have to listen to an obnoxiously, LOUD, offensive commercial! When will advertisers ever learn to go back to pleasant, sweet tones & calm speech to capture our interest? All they do now, is SHOUT OUT with LOUD beckoning spectacles, not unlike cheap, carnival booth attendants. I can't get them muted fast enough and the last thing I want, is to stare into the strobe light of flashing images they put on. It seems they are doing everything they can to repel interest, rather than attract it. Life is not some cheap, honkytonk parade, and it's high time they understood it!

Anyone notice how Al Jolson's vocals are easily understood, while John Steel's are almost incomprehensible due to the added 'acrobatics' and rolled 'r's'? To me, such stylings are often what makes a recording 'dated', not the year the record was pressed. In fact, Jolson would continue to perform until his death in 1950 (shortly after returning to the U.S. after performing for troops in Korea), whereas Steel's career foundered in the early '30s, forcing him to declare bankruptcy (he was later able to obtain work as a vocal instructor, presumably teaching a less-ornate style).

This might be intermission music nowadays, but what an intermission. Recognition is due Charlie Strickfaden (baritone sax), Messrs. Dieterle, Russell, Malneck and Bowman (violins), and Jack Fulton (supposedly singing into his trombone mega-mute!) for extremely pleasant handling of the melody.

I'm fascninated by this generation. When they were born (1880s or 1890s) there were no cars, airplanes, radios, movies, music records, refrigeration, income taxes, voting rights for women, antibiotics, child labor laws or many other things that we associated with the modern era. When they died there were space missions to the moon. If you read biographies of folks from this generation they are incredibly tough. These are the folks working in coal mines as children and building skyscrapers without fall protection. They are the ones that went 'over the top' in France and Belgium. In middle age they were were frequently lamenting the softness of the WW2 'greatest generation.'

hardships are necessary. it's amusing and ironic how humans sing the praises of wolves for their noble work, thinning the herds and keeping the deer, elk and bison populations healthy and disease free... but then they make it illegal for human children to get jobs to help support their families or themselves (what is the point of school if not to acquire a profession outside of minimum wage food service and retail??) we need apprenticeships, kids need to know what it's like to toil and struggle and see the fruits of their labor. And as "hard as life was" for past generations, they maintained the one thing we lack...and that is a sense of humor. we whiiiiiine about so much. unimportant things, comments that do not impact our lives, the opinions of others.. we want to destroy people for disagreeing with the hive mind. why? what a horrible world we live in. I would much rather exist in a time before gluttony and excess, piggish spoiled behavior and hateful hearts with no humor. biographies are all well and good, but the last thing i want to read is some modern view of history, deciding whether or not that person was miserable or abused. I much prefer journals, diaries and autobiographies. and i will recommend to you the one i am reading right now. The Log of the Skipper's Wife. This woman was tough, opinionated, honest and hilarious. she isn't constantly whining about the unfairness of the world. she isn't trying to solve everyones problems for them though the issues of the day are very much present (they even had electric cars at the time - 1910.) And in spite of the lack of medical advances and human rights, the one thing she is anxiously longing for is her own baby. Amazing. No, that generation was right to point out the softness. it only got softer, greedier, whinier and more useless. how many people lack basic life skills such as cooking, budgeting and cleaning up after themselves?? but they will spend hours on end pointing out someone elses problems. You can have it. I want to go back in time, hang voting rights! it's not that i don't appreciate them. I just find more value in everything we have lost since then. Families with both parents, the mother at home with her children, the father leading by example, teaching his sons valuable skills. it all went south after WWII..... the creeping tentacles of communism and malcontents. they're never happy until everyone is miserable.

    • @adamoliver4094

@@Hy-Brasil It's not completely illegal for kids to work. I definitely remember picking fruit for money before I was old enough to get a W2 job. I agree with you however regarding biographies. My favorite ones are autobiographies written in the period in which the people lived. It's especially interesting to get the worldviews of these people in their own time. The recollection of William Finaughty (written as an elephant hunter in the 1860s) is pretty shocking for a modern reader. However, they are more valuable for their authenticity and absence of 21st century social norms. I also agree with your comments about the changes in society after WW2. I think part of it was intentional Marxist goals to destroy society so that it could be remade. However, I think it was also that the last generation born in the 19th century was dying and losing their influence over society.
